The Georgia Lottery Corporation (GLC) has hit a jackpot of its own by raising over $30 billion for education since it started in 1993. This academic windfall, according to an announcement from Governor Brian P. Kemp, has fueled essential programs like the Georgia Pre-K program and the HOPE Scholarship and Grant initiatives. The GLC's milestone was celebrated with high-ranking education officials at the Georgia-Georgia Tech game where a ceremonial check was presented.
During the game, Governor Kemp, flanked by VIPs like University System of Georgia Chancellor Sonny Perdue and the presidents of University of Georgia and Georgia Institute of Technology, exuded pride for the lottery's achievement. Governor Kemp shared, "On behalf of generations of Georgians, Marty and I are proud to congratulate the Georgia Lottery on this historic milestone and celebrate its impact on so many students, some of them twice as former Pre-K students and HOPE recipients," as reported by gov.georgia.gov. Such a hefty sum has set Georgia students on a successful educational trajectory from Pre-K through college.
Further underscoring the lottery's role in advancing education, the latest quarterly transfer of $414.8 million to the State Treasury's Lottery for Education account brought the total to $30.2 billion. These profits are exclusively earmarked for educational programs. The HOPE scholarship, having supported over 2.25 million students, joins Georgia's Pre-K in benefitting from the lottery's prosperity, as stated by GLC CEO Gretchen Corbin. "Every dollar raised contributes to Georgia’s HOPE Scholarship and Pre-K Programs with a wide-reaching impact for students, families and communities," Corbin elaborated on the Georgia Lottery's commitment to fund educational initiatives, as per gov.georgia.gov.
Educational advancements across the state have a common benefactor—the lottery proceeds investing over $1.8 billion in Georgia's public schools for infrastructure and technology upgrades. Akin to a guardian ensuring the best for its charges, the Georgia Lottery seems steadfast in nurturing the next generation through the auspices of quality education. It's not just about chance, it's about change, about shifting the educational landscape wherein all 4-year-olds can access voluntary prekindergarten and aspiring scholars can dream of a college education without the specter of prohibitive costs looming large.
