Glendale Mayor Ara Najarian recently returned from a fruitful visit to South Korea, which included stops in Glendale's sister city Boeun and friendship cities Paju and Seongbuk-gu, as well as Seoul, Hanam, and the Incheon Free Economic Zone, according to the city's news release. The Mayor's trip, from November 8 to November 17, focused on exploring economic development, urban design, and cultural exchange.
From neon-lit commercial districts to the traditional craft-rich mountainous regions and high-tech developments, the Mayor took in a multitude of South Korean urban experiences, noting the integration of cutting-edge architecture with natural and recreational spaces, and the blending of commerce, art, and culture, which could be seen in places like the artsy promenades and side alleys vibrant with outdoor businesses and food carts displaying a cornucopia of street fare against bright digital backdrop akin to Glendale's Artsakh Street, the statement detailed.
Mayor Najarian's agenda included visiting educational institutions, art centers, and coastal attractions, particularly highlighted by the Incheon Free Economic Zone's mixed-use skyscraper landscape which he described as featuring a "strikingly modern" airport complemented with high-end retail and impressive digital displays. The visit also brought him to the popular Gangnam district, where he observed contemporary building designs harmoniously coexisting with riverfront promenades and green spaces, adding to Seoul's reputation as a city that smartly balances its natural beauty with its bustling urban environment.
Diplomatic efforts were not left by the wayside; Mayor Najarian's discussions at the Hollywood Asia Expo in Hanam signaled potential partnerships between Glendale's entertainment industry and South Korea's K-pop scene, dramas, fashion, and music sectors that are flourishing which "What impressed me most about Korea was the imaginative and bold approach each city takes toward economic development," Najarian said, "These communities aren't afraid to try new ideas, and they've created vibrant urban spaces that blend commerce, culture, and community in exciting ways," he observed, highlighting the positive impact of cultural and economic exchange on both countries' interests.
Glendale, known as the "Jewel City," is the fourth largest city in Los Angeles County, boasting a population of almost 200,000 and serving as a hub to major companies in various industries, including entertainment and banking. The city's Sister City Program, instituted in 1960, plays a key role in fostering international relations by promoting cultural, educational, and economic ties with cities around the world, a mission that Mayor Najarian's South Korea visit has evidently advanced.
