Yesterday morning, traffic on Interstate 20 eastbound came to a standstill due to a collision near the West Avenue exit in Conyers. The Georgia Department of Transportation confirmed the involvement of multiple vehicles and reported that at least one individual suffered serious injuries in the crash, as reported by FOX 5 Atlanta.
Commuters faced significant delays, as the flow of traffic was disrupted for hours. Those on the road were encouraged to seek alternative routes while the scene was managed. At the time, details surrounding the cause of the accident and the identity of the injured parties remained unclear, with ongoing investigations expected to provide clarity.
Diving deeper into the incident, additional information was provided by 11Alive News, disclosing that the events unfolded around 12:17 a.m. and began when a Dodge Challenger encountered mechanical issues and was stranded in the right lane of I-20. The noble actions of a Dodge Ram truck driver, who had exited their vehicle to assist the occupants of the Challenger, turned critical when a Mercedes sedan collided with the stationary Challenger and sideswiped the Ram, causing the pedestrian, the Ram's driver, to be hit by the two vehicles.
The ensuing impact resulted in serious injuries for the Good Samaritan, who was subsequently airlifted to Grady Hospital for treatment. Further complicating the incident, the driver of the Challenger was found to be under the influence of alcohol at the time of the crash, though charges had not been filed immediately following the event.
Both eastbound lanes of I-20 were closed for approximately four and a half hours for collision investigation and cleanup starting at mile marker 80. As in any major thoroughfare incident, the Georgia State Patrol continues to look into the specifics and will release further information as it becomes available.
