Texas Governor Greg Abbott is taking a victory lap for the state’s burgeoning energy sector, which has seen a particular boost from the nuclear industry this year. “By solidifying our great state as a prairie for nuclear energy to thrive, Texas' energy ecosystem is stronger than ever before,” Abbott said, as reported by the governor’s official website. With a range of new legislation and significant investments in place, Texas is positioning itself as a leading force in the future of America’s energy production.

Abbott's agenda as governor has included a suite of laws aimed at protecting and propelling the traditional oil and gas sector. In June, he signed legislation to tackle oilfield theft and enhance economic development. Among the measures were bills establishing a petroleum product theft task force and creating organized oilfield theft prevention within the Department of Public Safety, according to the official statement from the Governor’s office. Backing these initiatives was an unprecedented $123 million investment into The Beacon, poised to stimulate substantial growth in the Midland-Odessa region.

The legislative package, however, isn’t just about oil and gas. House Bill 14, which aims to revolutionize Texas’s place in the nuclear industry, has marked a pivot to advanced nuclear energy. “Texas is the energy capital of the world, and this legislation will position Texas at the forefront of America's nuclear renaissance,” Governor Abbott stated on his website. This focus on nuclear energy is supported by the creation of the Texas Advanced Nuclear Energy Office (TANEO), which is coupled with a $350 million investment dedicated to furthering nuclear development.

In September, Governor Abbott appointed Jarred Shaffer as the director of TANEO, a move to support advanced nuclear project development within Texas and administer the Texas Advanced Nuclear Development Fund. Shaffer's role will involve streamlining nuclear regulatory environments and directing investments to encourage a competitive nuclear power industry. “TANEO and the Texas Advanced Nuclear Development Fund will increase Texas' investment in an all-of-the-above energy approach to solidify Texas as the world's energy hub,” said Abbott, according to the press release.

The Texas Nuclear Summit in October saw Governor Abbott receiving the "Atomic Texan Award", where he expounded on the state's leadership in the nuclear renaissance. The investment in nuclear is matched by substantial commitments to traditional energy sources, like natural gas, demonstrating the state’s dual approach to energy generation. These investments are part of the Texas Energy Fund (TxEF), a new initiative to support the construction and modernization of electric facilities. Projects receiving TEF funds include multi-million dollar investments in natural gas power plants across the state, according to the same press release.
