In a move that underscores the intersection of politics and military appointments, Georgia Governor Brian P. Kemp has called upon Senator Alex Padilla (D-Calif.), to cease his hold on the confirmation of Lieutenant General Thomas “Tom” Carden as Vice Chief of the National Guard Bureau. Kemp's request, directed at Padilla, was made public through a letter that criticized the delay as politically motivated. The nomination of Gen. Carden, with a military tenure extending over three decades, has been in limbo for over five months.
Gov. Kemp emphasized the urgency of filling this "critical, non-political national security role." He highlighted Gen. Carden's "38 years of valued military service" which included leadership during the COVID-19 pandemic. Acclaimed for his dedication, Carden's record, Kemp argued, should transcend partisan obstruction. "So I'm urging Senator Padilla to withdraw his politically-driven hold on the confirmation process and ask all senators to publicly advocate for this American hero and the contributions he'll make to our national security," Kemp stated in the announcement.
The role in question is one steeped in responsibilities critical to national defense. The Vice Chief of the National Guard Bureau is tasked with advising high-level military and civilian leaders and works closely with the Joint Chiefs of Staff. Gen. Carden's extensive experience, currently as Deputy Commander of U.S. Northern Command and Vice Commander of the U.S. Element of North American Aerospace Defense Command, underlines his readiness for the position. Previously, he also served as the adjutant general of Georgia, managing the state's Guard operations domestically and abroad.
