It's a shift in the governance landscape for the University of Houston System as Governor Greg Abbott infuses new blood into its Board of Regents. The latest appointments bring in a diverse mix of expertise spanning health care, law, construction, and financial accounting. Governor Abbott's office announced the decision, appointing Tommy Lucas, O.D., and Lynden Rose to the board, with Alonzo Cantu being reappointed for a term ending in 2031, while a different term ushers in Bryan Clark until 2029.
Leading the list of appointees, Tommy Lucas, O.D. comes with an extensive background in optometry. Co-founding VIEW Optometry and Elevate Digital Optics, Lucas' experience is expected to provide a unique perspective to the Board, given his role as a former president of the Texas Optometric Association. A graduate from UH College of Optometry himself, his connection to the institution is deeply rooted, as detailed in an announcement by the Governor's office.
Lynden Rose joins the board bearing the mantle of legal expertise and a pledge to engage with the community. An attorney of counsel with HooverSlovacek LLP, Rose also serves as vice chairman of the Harris County Houston Sports Authority Board, and his appointment as the Honorary Counul General to Houston by the Bahamas Ministry of Foreign Affairs marks his international recognition. Rose's UH alma mater roots run from undergraduate to his Juris Doctor degree from the UH Law School.
Alonzo Cantu's reappointment comes as no surprise, given his entrepreneurial and philanthropic contributions to education. As CEO and president of Cantu Construction & Development Company and chairman of Lone Star National Bank, Cantu bears financial acumen alongside a dedication to mentorship seen in his chairmanship at Valley Alliance of Mentors for Opportunities and Scholarships. His University of Houston education in finance makes him a well-versed choice for the board's composition and vision.
The board's financial oversight will be further strengthened with the inclusion of Bryan Clark, who brings his certified public accountant (CPA) credibility to the table. A principal at Doeren Mayhew, his church and non-profit commitments display his community-oriented values, including his role as a connect group director at Sagemont Church. Clark's UH education in accounting and marketing primes him as a multifaceted asset for the Board of Regents, as noted in the official statement.
As the University of Houston System gears up under a new direction, the community watches on with anticipation. This blend of experience aligns with the institution's ethos of diversity and excellence, and the freshly appointed members step into their roles, poised to influence the future of tens of thousands of students within the UH system.
