In a recent move fortified by intention, Governor Greg Abbott solidified the leadership of the Texas School for the Deaf (TSD) by appointing three members to its governing board. Heather "Hex" Lightfoot, a seasoned advocate and parent within the Deaf community, has been reappointed, while Gregorio Mata and Oscar Ocuto, Ed.D., both esteemed for their ties to education and service, have been newly welcomed to steward the institution into its upcoming years.
The trio's tenure on the board is slated to end on January 31, 2031, a span that will assuredly see them oversee and possibly fundamentally shape the budget, policy, and appointment of the school's superintendent. According to a statement from the Texas Governor's official website, these appointments are part of Abbott's continuous thrust to ensure that TSD services meet the needs of its diverse student body.
Lightfoot, based in Austin, juggles advocacy with her role as a parent to children who navigate different spectrums of sensory experiences—one DeafBlind, one Deaf, and one hearing. Her academic credentials stem from Gallaudet University and Texas Tech University, where she focused on graphic design and special education, respectively.
Mata, attached to an operations role at Activating Change, touts a Government Bachelor's degree from Gallaudet and a Master of Public Administration from Lamar University. His involvement extends into the TSD District Advisory Committee and beyond, into spaces where children's potential is to be maximally explored and encouraged.
Ocuto's career is rooted in education, with his position as an assistant professor at Gallaudet University complementing his involvement in various educational committees and associations. As a holder of multiple degrees in the field of deaf education and a doctorate from Lamar University, his expertise will be instrumental in guiding TSD's educational strategies and execution.
The combined experience of these appointees, their linked histories with Gallaudet University, and their deep involvement in advocacy work construct a board with a robust understanding of the needs within the Deaf and DeafBlind communities. This expertise stands to guide TSD's mission to equip students not only with education but also with a voice that reverberates beyond the confines of the school's walls.
