Massachusetts’ newly formed Competitiveness Council held its first meeting under Governor Healey and Lieutenant Governor Driscoll. The council, which includes more than 20 leaders from business, labor, academia, and state government, aims to develop strategies to strengthen the state’s economic competitiveness.

According to Mass.gov, Governor Maura Healey, present at the meeting, launched the Competitiveness Council in October. The council is tasked with advising on policies and initiatives to support businesses, create jobs, and maintain Massachusetts’ leadership in sectors such as innovation. Healey said, “I formed this Council because I want Massachusetts firing on all cylinders, and winning the best jobs, investments, startups, companies and talent.”

Lieutenant Governor Kim Driscoll noted the Council’s regional diversity and stressed the importance of addressing the unique economic needs of communities across Massachusetts, from the Berkshires to Cape Cod.

The Council plans to focus on business incentives, regulation, innovation support, workforce development, and taxation. According to Mass.gov, Dan Kenary, President and Co-Founder of Harpoon Brewery and co-chair of the Council, said, “This Council brings together voices from every corner of our economy to help chart a path forward.” The goal is to identify effective policies and address areas that need improvement through a collaborative approach.

The Council is expected to issue recommendations to guide legislation, budget priorities, and program development. Its first meeting included introductions of members, with additional appointments planned. The roster includes business executives, legislators, Chamber leaders, and labor representatives.
