Arizona's infrastructure is set to receive a significant boost as Governor Katie Hobbs has announced the investment of $15.6 million into the state's power grid. These funds will be directed to four key projects with the purpose of increasing grid resilience against extreme weather events, such as wildfires, and will also work to reduce power outages across the state.
The sum, allocated via the Governor’s Office of Resiliency’s Arizona Grid Resilience Grant Program, is part of a larger effort aiming not only to decrease outages but also to bring down the energy costs for Arizonans. According to a statement obtained by the Office of Arizona Governor, Governor Hobbs firmly believes that "Investments in Arizona energy are investments in growing our economy, creating more jobs, and ensuring opportunity for all Arizonans." With cost matching from grant recipients, the total investment reaches $27 million, which signifies a substantial commitment to the development and stability of Arizona’s energy infrastructure.
Forecasts suggest these efforts will lead to power outages for nearly 290,000 customers and lower wildfire risks by 20% in affected regions. Additionally, they are expected to extend the equipment lifespan and, in Henry Ford-like efficiency, boost grid capacity to weather the storms and fires that so frequently threaten the region.
Among the projects are the Rural Arizona Cooperative Grid Hardening Project, which sees various electric cooperatives joining forces to replace outdated infrastructure with more robust and durable counterparts, and the Strengthening Arizona's Grid Utilizing Advanced Resilience Operations ("SAGUARO")—a venture by Arizona Public Service Company focused on advanced monitoring and grid hardening. According to a statement obtained by the Office of Arizona Governor, the Director of the Governor’s Office of Resiliency, Maren Mahoney, points out that these "innovative improvements to our energy system will help prevent extreme weather damage and reduce impacts on Arizona families and businesses."
Completion of these grid strengthening ventures is anticipated by the end of 2027. The projects are partly enabled by federal funding, a provision of the U.S. Department of Energy's Grid Resilience Formula Grant Program as authorized by the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law.
