An alarming incident unfolded at Alcorn Central campus in Alcorn County, Mississippi, where a student's grandfather was taken into custody after attempting to pull out a gun on school grounds. According to the WREG, the episode transpired on Monday morning, with the school's resource officer intervening in the parking lot before the grandfather could gain entry into the school.
The man, reported to be visiting his grandchild, was immediately approached as he did not have the necessary authorization to access the campus. It was in the midst of this confrontation that he tried to, but failed, to produce the weapon. "He was immediately approached by a school resource officer in the parking lot before he could enter the school. That’s when the sheriff’s office says he tried to produce a firearm. The officer subdued him and took him into custody," explained the Alcorn County Sheriff’s Office in a statement obtained by WREG.
The unidentified man was arrested and subsequently booked into the Alcorn County Jail. Despite the tension such incidents evoke, school officials and law enforcement did not elaborate on the charges the grandfather may face. As reported by Action News 5, school officials have kept the man's identity confidential up to this point.
In a release provided to FOX13 Memphis, Alcorn School District Superintendent Brandon Quinn lauded the quick response of the school resource officer, affirming, "Our SRO acted quickly, subdued the individual, and took him into custody. Additional law enforcement officers responded to secure the area." Quinn further asserted belief in the altercation being an isolated incident, advising that school activities would proceed as scheduled.
The community, while startled by the event, has been reassured by the swift action of the school personnel and police. Superintendent Quinn expressed his gratitude: "We are deeply grateful for the swift, decisive actions of our school personnel and law enforcement partners, whose response helped ensure the safety of our students and staff," as he told FOX13 Memphis.
