Historic Gruene faces months of construction and detours as New Braunfels Utilities begins a $7 million sewer overhaul in January 2026. Work under downtown Gruene and along Gruene Road, Hunter Road, and New Braunfels Street will bring overnight closures, reduced street parking, and one-way detours through spring.

What's Being Replaced And Why

The project will replace an aging 12-inch sewer main with an 18-inch line, install a new odor-control unit on the 1200 block of Gruene Road, and upgrade 6- and 8-inch cast-iron siphon lines crossing the Guadalupe River. New Braunfels Utilities says the overhaul will increase capacity, improve reliability, and reduce odor issues, with a total budget of about $7 million.

Traffic Changes Drivers Should Expect

Weekdays from 7 a.m. to 11 p.m., Gruene Road will be one-way southbound between New Braunfels Street and Hunter Road, with northbound access limited to parking lot turns and street parking restricted on parts of Hunter Road. Overnight closures Sunday through Friday will shut both Gruene and Hunter roads, while New Braunfels Street will operate with a single alternating lane controlled by flaggers. Weekend hours will also have restrictions, MySA reports.

Phases And The River Crossing

The project has two phases: a downtown phase from January to March and a river-crossing phase from March to May. During the river phase, crews will replace the cast-iron siphon lines and add a siphon vault. Community Impact reports that the utility plans to minimize impacts on visitors and businesses.

What This Means For Locals And Visitors

Commuters and weekend visitors should expect delays from downtown construction. The City of New Braunfels has posted traffic alerts for nighttime lane closures and flagger-controlled detours. Drivers are advised to use alternate routes and allow extra travel time through the spring.

Where To Get Updates

Schedules and traffic maps could shift with weather or construction delays, so it is worth checking official updates before heading into Gruene.
