Yesterday, O'Donnell Middle School in Alief went into lockdown after multiple 911 calls reported a person with a gun on campus. Staff secured students in classrooms while law enforcement and emergency medical personnel responded. The lockdown was later lifted, and officials confirmed that no injuries occurred.
In a letter to families, Alief ISD reported that the first 911 call came in just before 3:30 p.m., with multiple callers claiming a person with a gun was inside the school, according to ABC13. The district conducted a comprehensive search of the campus while authorities worked to verify the situation. Officials have not yet identified a suspect or confirmed the source of the calls.
The school remained on lockdown while officers cleared the area, which was lifted shortly after 4:15 p.m. Students were dismissed on their normal schedule, as per FOX 26 Houston. The Harris County Sheriff’s Office, Houston Police Department, and Alief ISD Police Department all responded to the campus. District officials stated that an investigation into the incident is ongoing.
Parents and nearby residents reported a significant police and medical presence around the school, with social media posts noting numerous emergency vehicles and at least one helicopter overhead. Eyewitnesses also described a law enforcement staging area near Alief Clodine Road. These accounts supplemented official updates, which confirmed that no credible threat was ultimately found.
Why The Police Response Was So Intense
When 911 dispatchers receive reports of a potential shooter at a school, districts and responding agencies treat it as a high-risk emergency and act quickly to secure students and staff. Texas law also addresses false reports that prompt such responses: under Penal Code Section 42.06, a false alarm that disrupts a public primary or secondary school can be classified as a state jail felony, and Section 37.08 prohibits knowingly making a materially false statement to law enforcement. As a result, officials generally attempt to trace hoax calls and may pursue charges if a false report is confirmed.
District Guidance And What Parents Were Told
Alief ISD reminded families that weapons are prohibited on school grounds and that bringing one to campus violates the student code of conduct. The district provided guidance for reporting suspicious behavior, including contacting the Alief Police Department, Houston Police Department Westside, Crime Stoppers, or 911, and encouraged parents to follow official district messages for reunification instructions and updates, as reported by FOX 26 Houston. Officials said they will share additional information as the investigation continues.
What Happens Next
Investigators are reviewing 911 call logs to determine whether the reports were accurate or false. If a call is confirmed to be a hoax, it could result in criminal charges or school disciplinary action. O'Donnell Middle School serves more than 1,200 students in Alief ISD, as noted by The Texas Tribune. Officials will provide updates as more information becomes available.
