H-E-B, the revered Texas grocery chain, is laying out expansion plans, targeting the Houston area with a new Joe V's Smart Shop. According to KHOU 11, this bargain-oriented grocery will occupy a 56,786-square-foot space at 1227 Orem Drive in the City Park area of southern Houston. The project, set to cost at least $11.9 million, is expected to commence in May 2026 with a completion slated for mid-2027.
Meanwhile, as H-E-B expands its footprint in Houston, residents in the Seguin area have expressed a desire for more grocery options. As reported by My San Antonio, conversations on the Seguin, Texas, Community Facebook page demonstrate a clear demand for additional H-E-B and Walmart stores. This is largely due to a population jump, from 29,433 in 2020 to 39,704 today, and the resulting crowding that residents have been experiencing. In the words of resident Dravan McKnight, "The population increase has been insane," indicating the sizeable change in the city's density.
Comparisons are being drawn between Seguin and its neighboring city, New Braunfels, which boasts multiple locations of major retailers to support its growth. Some community members are citing longer commutes to shop at less crowded stores, suggesting regional demand as another contributor to the crowding. Furthermore, the Seguin community has been vocal about wanting a variety of retailers, including discount and specialty grocery stores such as Aldi and Sprouts.
Adding to Seguin’s retail mix, the existing H-E-B is undergoing a $2.3 million upgrade principally for improving curbside pickup, an enhancement that will be complete early next year. This is pertinent as community members, like Gabriela Santos, acknowledge "It’s the holidays so most places are more crowded," yet they hold firm in their belief for the need of another H-E-B. Despite the implications of increased commercial activity and traffic, the overall sentiment from Seguin residents is one of a call for greater retail diversity to accommodate a ballooning population, as reported by My San Antonio.
The retail developments in both Houston and Seguin reflect Texas cities' responses to distinct community needs and growth patterns. With new construction and upgrades spurred by resident feedback, H-E-B is playing a key role in shaping the consumer landscapes of these diverse Texas communities.
