The Hawaiʻi Department of Transportation (HDOT) has declared a traffic emergency zone on Hawaiʻi Belt Road between mile posts 3 and 15 due to severe road damage. The roadway, including depressions and slope changes, requires urgent repairs to prevent hazards.
Inspections revealed deep-seated failures threatening the stability of Hawaiʻi Belt Road. Immediate repairs, starting in January, will fix roads and stabilize slopes for safe travel. A thorough evaluation will plan for the highway’s long-term recovery.
HDOT says the emergency designation will speed up procurement and permitting, allowing for rapid repairs to the damaged road.
Residents and commuters are invited to a public meeting on the traffic emergency zone. The virtual meeting will be held on Microsoft Teams at 10 a.m. on Dec. 16. Participation details are available in HDOT’s announcement.
