Hernando County Detention Center is currently undergoing a set of financial improvements aimed at reducing costs and enhancing efficiency. According to a recent press release from the Hernando County Sheriff's Office, which has overseen operations at the facility for the last 15 years, is now implementing a series of practical measures to improve conditions without the need for additional taxpayer funding.

The plans include an onsite warehouse with freezer space to replace a $50,000-per-year leased facility, improving food purchase efficiency. A new visitation building will replace the outdated structure, addressing safety, repairs, and roof issues. A renovated maintenance building will provide a work area where inmates can learn skills useful for post-release employment.

Sheriff Al Nienhuis is leading the initiative, which follows the detention center’s long-term master plan. The upgrades aim to improve daily operations while accounting for volatile material costs.

Construction on the three buildings is progressing, with electricians on site and services like internet, security cameras, plumbing, and HVAC being scheduled. Maintenance staff and supervised inmate crews are framing interiors and office spaces. The $350,000 project is expected to finish in early 2026 and is funded through revenues from housing federal and Pasco County inmates. The on-site warehouse will save about $50,000 per year, helping the project pay for itself.

Hernando County’s detention center is undergoing operational upgrades without using local tax dollars. The improvements aim to enhance safety, efficiency, and service delivery while reinvesting in the facility’s infrastructure.
