The streets of Hickory will see an increased presence of police officers in December, as the Hickory Police Department's Pay Attention in City Traffic (P.A.C.T.) initiative comes into effect with a focus on Falling Creek Road NE, 2nd Avenue NW, and 3rd Avenue NW. According to an announcement published on the City of Hickory's official website, enforcement efforts will primarily target distracted driving, speeding, and other traffic infractions.

During this traffic enforcement push, police officers will be specifically charged to closely monitor and discourage behaviors such as following too close to other vehicles. Pedestrians haven't been left out of the conversation either, with the initiative encouraging them to utilize crosswalks, obey pedestrian signals, and to always look to wear reflective gear at night.

Motorists are also being urged to pay extra attention to pedestrians, especially at crosswalks and designated crossings. "Also, remember to look for pedestrians while turning," reminds the announcement from the Hickory Police Department.

It's evident that the Police Department aims to collectively ensure everyone's safety by asking all citizens using the roadways to remain alert. They are to always remember to obey traffic laws, an effort that the Department believes will safeguard motorists, cyclists, and pedestrians alike. "All motorists need to be vigilant, aware, and respectful of cyclists utilizing roadways," the Hickory Police Department stated in its traffic directive. With safety as the paramount goal, the P.A.C.T. initiative represents a broader appeal from the Hickory Police Department to the community's sense of mutual responsibility
