A tragic end to a police chase unfolded on Interstate 70 yesterday morning when a 29-year-old woman, identified as Precious Black, died after her car crashed following a high-speed pursuit that began in Illinois. As per KSDK, the chase started when Fairmont City police tried to stop Black for speeding. During the traffic stop, things took a fatal turn when Black reportedly fled, dragging an officer for several feet before police say the officer was able to disengage and subsequently taken to the hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.
The chase continued into St. Louis, where it tragically ended. Black's vehicle struck a guardrail and a light pole, which led to her being pronounced dead at the scene. According to a FOX 2 Now report, the Fairmont City officer had attempted to remove Black from the vehicle initially, leading to the unintended acceleration and the subsequent chase. The interstate was closed for several hours due to the investigation, creating a significant disruption in traffic flow.
Investigators are now looking to piece together the events that led to the tragic outcome. Per information obtained from the St. Louis Metropolitan Police Department spokesperson Mitch McCoy by KSDK, further details are being sought, including "in-car and possible body camera video," which will be reviewed as part of the investigation into the crash's cause.
The incident has brought forward serious questions about the nature of the initial traffic stop and the pursuit that ensued. Authorities have yet to release specifics on why the officer tried to physically remove the driver, which FOX 2 Now notes as a key detail missing from the current narrative. In a sobering reminder of the potential outcomes of police chases, this event marks the second deadly pursuit originating from Illinois this month. The St. Louis Police Department's Accident Reconstruction Unit and the department’s Force Investigations Unit are continuing to actively investigate the situation, according to a First Alert 4 report.
