A late-night drive on Highway 6 in Sugar Land turned tragic on Tuesday when a car crossed the median near Imperial Boulevard and smashed into oncoming traffic, killing one woman and sending three other people to the hospital. City officials said a vehicle heading south on Highway 6 suddenly veered across the median into the northbound lanes, where it was hit by a pickup truck. The female driver of the car that crossed the median was pronounced dead at the scene, and three people riding in the pickup were taken to a hospital. Authorities have not released the names of those involved or their current conditions, and they have not said what might have caused the car to cross into opposing traffic, according to FOX 26 Houston.
Investigation underway
Sugar Land police and fire investigators stayed on scene late into the night, collecting evidence from the roadway and talking with witnesses who saw the crash unfold. So far, the department has not indicated whether impairment, a mechanical problem or a medical emergency might have been a factor.
Why median crossovers are especially dangerous
When a vehicle crosses a median and barrels into oncoming lanes, the result is often a head-on or high-angle collision, which is among the most violent types of roadway crashes. The Federal Highway Administration estimates that lane-departure crashes account for roughly 58% of roadway fatalities, a stark reminder of how deadly these incidents can be (FHWA). Investigators will use vehicle damage, roadway markings and witness statements as they work to piece together what happened on Highway 6.
