Hilo’s Family Court celebrated Adoption Day by finalizing adoptions and guardianships for 14 children and their new parents. The annual event, held the week before Thanksgiving, is supported by local judiciary members and businesses to create a memorable experience for families.

In its eighth year, the event highlighted the community’s support for children. District Family Court Judge Darien Nagata, along with Judiciary Program Services Specialist Shelley Carter and Department of Attorney General Legal Clerk Tehani Villalobos, helped distribute monogrammed backpacks, blankets, teddy bears, gift cards, and treats to the children.

According to the Hawaii State Judiciary press release, Emotions ran high during the hearings, with families filling the courtroom. ‘We created our version of National Adoption Day eight years ago, and this yearly event has become a special day at Hilo Family Court,’ Judge Nagata said. Some hearings were attended by up to thirty family members and friends.

Local organizations contributed to Hilo Family Court’s Adoption Day, including Lady Q’s Big Island Event Services with a photo booth, The Jockey Foundation with backpacks, the Geist Foundation with gift cards, and KTA Superstores with cupcakes and fruit. The Hawaiʻi State Judiciary provided treat bags and certificates. Social workers, attorneys, guardians ad litem, and judges were recognized for their roles in supporting the children.
