In an inspiring turn of events, Malena Mendoza, a 26-year-old nursing student at El Paso Community College (EPCC), defied the odds after a cancer diagnosis to complete her Associate Degree of Nursing. Mendoza will be honored at EPCC's nursing pinning ceremony this week, as reported by EPCC News.

Diagnosed with a rare and aggressive Mesenchymal Chondrosarcoma, following the discovery of significant swelling in her leg, Mendoza underwent chemotherapy while keeping up with a full load of nursing courses. Despite her demanding treatment schedule, her situation did not deter her academic pursuit, nor dampen her spirits, as confirmed by the tenacity she showed in pressing forward with both her medical treatments and her education. "I was terrified," Mendoza told EPCC News, recalling her initial reaction to the diagnosis. "How will I finish school? How will I start my life?"

Mendoza's decision to undergo chemotherapy, in hopes of saving her leg and completing her education, was met with unwavering support from the EPCC community. Her assistant professor of nursing, Irma Carlos De Ramirez, praised Malena's dedication, citing that she "continues to strive for excellence" even while battling her illness. Indeed, Mendoza's story has resonated among her peers, offering an emblem of resilience and determination.

The completion of Mendoza's degree comes after a period fraught with uncertainty. Yet her passion for nursing and her unwavering support system propelled her to the cusp of her professional dream, now on the eve of her pinning ceremony. Following graduation, she will undergo surgery to remove the tumor from her hip. Then, she plans to ready herself for the National Council Licensure Exam, with aspirations to work in neonatal or adult intensive care units. "I'm so excited and emotional to graduate," Mendoza expressed the sentiments that underscore her journey to academic and personal triumph, as per EPCC News.

EPCC will celebrate Mendoza's graduation, among other successful students, at a scheduled pinning ceremony on Thursday, December 11, and at two commencement ceremonies to follow on Friday, December 12. The ceremonies will take place at the EPCC Administrative Services Center Auditorium and the Don Haskins Center, respectively, marking the culmination of perseverance and the beginning of a new chapter for the graduates.
