After nearly seven and a half years of serving the community, Invictus Brewing Co. has officially ceased operations, unable to find a new home amid soaring costs. The Blaine-based brewery, known for its craft beers since 2018, had informed the public in November that the financial barriers to relocating were insurmountable, leading to its closure on December 21, according to KSTP. In an earlier attempt to find a new location, Invictus had already sold its property, underestimating the steep climb in real estate and operational costs.
"Thank you to everybody who supported us over the years. We are truly blessed that you chose to be a part of our journey and community," reads a heartening statement from the brewery. Despite the outpouring of community support, the harsh economic realities proved too challenging for Invictus, with rising costs of ingredients and supplies also contributing factors to their decision. Remaining operational despite the brewery's shuttering, The Tipsy Steer continues to serve patrons, KARE 11 reports.
Invictus Brewing Co. joins several other Minnesota breweries that closed their doors this year, such as Wild Mind Ales and Chanhassen Brewing Company. The challenging climate for breweries has been further corroborated by the Brewers Association, which expects 2025 to mark the second year in a row where more breweries close than open nationwide. Yet, despite these closures, Minnesota still hosts over twice the number of breweries compared to a decade ago.
A Gallup Poll released this summer indicated a dip in American alcohol consumption, highlighting a trend where fewer individuals are choosing to drink, and those who do are drinking less. Independent breweries like Invictus have felt this shift, coupled with economic pressures, leading to a turbulent period for the industry. Reflecting on its inception, Invictus Brewing was born out of a "home brewing hobby gone rogue," drawing its name from a William Ernest Henley poem, and once epitomized the spirit of the local craft beer movement.
The landscape for small breweries continues to evolve, with some, like Dangerous Man, finding a way to reopen under new ownership, whereas others conclude their final chapters. The closure of Invictus Brewing Co. not only signifies the end of a local business but also serves as a stark reminder of the fragility faced by small enterprises in a rapidly changing economic environment.
