Jacksonville is set to broaden its horizons on the affordable housing front as it joins an international cohort of cities in the European Union's EU Cities Gateway North America Program. The City of Jacksonville will work in tandem with six other cities, including two from Canada: Laval, Québec and Toronto, Ontario; another U.S. city: Atlanta, Georgia, as well as Tampere in Finland, Barcelona in Spain, and Parma in Italy. Through collaborative efforts, these cities aim to tackle housing challenges with innovative solutions.

Local leaders are optimistic about the global attention and potential knowledge exchange. Mayor Donna Deegan told the City of Jacksonville's government news, "Jacksonville's selection places us on a global stage as we continue our work to make housing more affordable for everyone.” Her expectation is that through this partnership, Jacksonville can learn and replicate successful strategies from cities around the globe, easing the strain on family pocketbooks, and accommodating the city's rapid population growth.

As part of this program, the City of Jacksonville will engage in various activities spanning study visits, workshops, webinars, to direct collaboration via online and in-person meetings within the housing cluster. The end goal is the joint development of a housing pilot project tailored to the growing needs of the community. Colin Tarbert, CEO of the Downtown Investment Authority and the city's primary program coordinator, expressed anticipation for what's to come: “This initiative aligns perfectly with Jacksonville’s commitment to expanding housing access and ensuring residents of all income levels can find a place to call home in Downtown and throughout the city,” he explained, reflecting an eagerness to embrace design innovation and affordable living solutions.

The city's participation in this prestigious program arrives amidst tangible progress in addressing affordable housing issues according to Jacksonville's Affordable Housing Director Joshua Hicks. “Jacksonville’s inclusion in this prestigious program underscores our ongoing efforts to address housing affordability." He added. “It comes at a time when we are making real progress in Jacksonville with thousands of affordable homes being built and programs in place to keep people housed," Hicks stated, as per the City of Jacksonville.
