The Jacksonville Sheriff's Office has reported a fatal officer-involved shooting that occurred on Monday evening. The incident, which took place on Ponce Boulevard off New Berlin Road around 6:30 p.m., involved task force officers who were seeking a suspect connected to a stolen vehicle and a series of business burglaries. According to a social media post from the sheriff’s office, the suspect was apprehended after being spotted entering the passenger side of a car, which officers then stopped.

In a detailed account of the situation shared by Sheriff T.K. Waters and Chief Alan Parker, a struggle ensued when another officer approached the driver's side to speak with the individual at the wheel. "The driver did not comply, and the driver and the officer began fighting. At one point during the fight, the driver pulled out a gun. The officer shot the driver in the head," the social media post read. The identity of the driver has not been confirmed as investigations are ongoing.

Officer Zachary Jennings has been identified as the law enforcement official who discharged his weapon, resulting in the driver's death. While details surrounding the driver's identity have yet to be disclosed, the sheriff's office has confirmed that the individual did not survive the confrontation.

This incident marks the 17th officer-involved shooting for the Jacksonville Sheriff's Office in 2025. The State Attorney's Office has already arrived at the scene to commence its investigation, which will be followed by an internal investigation by the sheriff's office itself to further examine the circumstances of the shooting.
