As the festive season's engine revs into high gear, the Jacksonville Sheriff's Office has issued a pivotal reminder to residents: safeguarding your holiday goodies is more than just a suggestion—it's a must. According to a recent social media post from the Jacksonville Sheriff's Office, there has been a spate of auto burglaries since Black Friday, tallying up to a whopping 159. The most startling statistic within this crime spree is that a vast majority of the burglarized vehicles, 95% to be exact, were unlocked, an open invitation to opportunistic thieves.
The Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office is warning the public about an increase in vehicle burglaries during the holiday season. Since just after Thanksgiving, 41 firearms have been reported stolen from vehicles, in addition to other valuables such as electronics and shopping bags left in plain view.
The sheriff’s office advises residents to keep gifts and valuables out of sight and to store items in the trunk when they cannot be removed from the vehicle. Locking vehicles is also emphasized as a key step in preventing theft.
According to information shared by the Jacksonville Sheriff's Office on social media, many of these incidents involved unlocked vehicles with visible items inside. Officials are encouraging drivers to take these precautions, especially during busy shopping periods, to reduce the risk of theft.
