In an effort to make public transportation more accessible, the Jacksonville Transportation Authority (JTA) has announced fare reductions across various services, highlighted by significant cuts to fixed route bus fares and the paratransit service, Connexion. Beginning February 1, 2026, commuters will benefit from a pilot program that slashes fixed route bus fares by 43% from $1.75 to $1.00, while Connexion users will see their fares halved from $2.00 to $1.00.
As reported by the official press release from the Jacksonville Transportation Authority, CEO Nat Ford encapsulated the organization's ethos in his statement, "By lowering fares, we’re removing barriers to mobility and making it easier for people across Jacksonville to access jobs, education, healthcare, and opportunity." The fare decrease also couples with JTA's move to make the Neighborhood Autonomous Vehicle Innovation (NAVI) service complimentary, set to take effect on December 15.
The fare reduction plan is not just an isolated move but part of a broader dialogue on improving public transit. JTA will hold public input meetings in the new year to solicit feedback and discuss updates on current services, fleet enhancements, and potential route changes. JTA public input meetings are set for January 6 through 8, then again from January 13 through 15, with specifics to be announced later.
The unanimously approved initiative, besides easing financial strain on the commuting public, likewise affirms the JTA Board of Directors’ commitment to innovative and responsive leadership. Board Chair Aundra Wallace expressed his praise for what the proposal represents, "This is what leadership looks like," according to the JTA press release.
