The County of Kauaʻi is holding a design charrette the week of January 12, 2026, to gather public input on redeveloping Haleko Road from Nāwiliwili Road to Rice Street, a key route connecting Līhu‘e to local businesses and homes. Partnering with the Hawaiʻi Department of Health and the Hawaiʻi Public Health Institute, the project aims to improve safety, traffic flow, and health outcomes for the community, according to the County of Kauai.

The initiative will include community walk audits and workshops, allowing residents to identify problem areas and suggest improvements. Proposed upgrades focus on road rehabilitation and making the corridor more pedestrian- and bicycle-friendly to enhance overall accessibility and wellbeing, as reported by the County of Kauai.

The County of Kauai is holding two community events at the Pi‘ikoi Building, Līhu‘e Civic Center, 4444 Rice Street. The first event is on January 13, 2026, from 4:30 to 8 p.m., where participants "will walk Haleko Road to identify areas for improvement," followed by a workshop starting at 6 p.m. The second event is on January 15, 2026, from 5 to 7 p.m., presenting preliminary design ideas based on community input. Dinner will be provided at both events, with options for dietary needs. People needing disability assistance can contact Marie Williams at [email protected] or 808-241-4067.
