The Kaua‘i Fire Department is advising residents on the safe use and maintenance of lithium-ion batteries amid their growing presence in everyday devices. Chief Michael Gibson noted that overheating or failing batteries can cause fires and release toxic gases. The guidance, part of ongoing fire prevention efforts, highlights basic safety measures households can follow to reduce risks.

Lithium-ion batteries are used in many household devices, including phones, laptops, e-scooters, and portable tools. Chief Gibson noted that these batteries store a large amount of energy in a small space. While generally safe, they can become hazardous if damaged, improperly charged, or exposed to high temperatures, the Kaua‘i Fire Department emphasized.

The Kaua‘i Fire Department recommends buying batteries and devices from reputable sources and using the correct charger for each device. Products tested by recognized laboratories meet safety standards, while counterfeit or off-brand chargers can increase the risk of overheating and fire, according to the county's release.

The department advises residents to follow safe charging practices, including charging devices on hard surfaces, unplugging them once fully charged, and avoiding overnight charging when possible. Batteries should be stored in cool, dry areas and kept safe from damage. Chief Gibson noted that any battery that is swollen, damaged, or unusually warm should be replaced immediately.

Proper disposal of old or damaged batteries is also emphasized, with residents encouraged to use the household battery drop-off point at the Kauai Resource Center. Detailed guidelines are available in the department’s Lithium-Ion Battery Best Practices Flyer, accessible on their website.
