In Kaua‘i, something special took place beyond the usual call of duty for the island's first responders. These local heroes came together on December 10 to deliver a different kind of emergency response – one bursting with goodwill and spirit. According to a press release from the County of Kaua'i website, 85 children from the Children's Justice Center partnered with first responders in the annual "Heroes and Helpers" event, where kids aged 5 to 17 were gifted $100 for a shopping spree, followed by a pizza party.
This event marked an impressive milestone, with emergency personnel outnumbering the children for the first time, demonstrating a strong community connection. The collaborative effort featured agencies like American Medical Response, the U.S. Coast Guard, among others, ensuring that the children left the day with much more than just physical gifts. Deputy Chief Mark Ozaki, in the statement obtained from the County of Kaua'i press release, shared that the event was "about our keiki," emphasizing that the purpose was to remind them of the community's commitment to their well-being and future.
Furthermore, the initiative underpins a deeper goal of building trust and restoring a sense of security among children who have faced tough circumstances. "This program is important because it helps children who have experienced trauma build trust and a sense of safety with our first responders," Karla Huerta, Program Director of the Children's Justice Center, conveyed to the County of Kaua'i government's newsroom. Not only does the event serve the children, but it also provides resiliency for the emergency personnel involved, offering emotional rewards and inspiration through their interaction with the youth.
In this season's gesture, the act of giving circled back as many children opted to purchase gifts for their families, rather than for themselves, showcasing a heartwarming display of generosity. This mutual exchange of kindness and humanity underscores the significance of the “Heroes and Helpers” event, beyond any monetary value. As detailed by the County of Kaua'i's press release, these instances offer emergency responders an invaluable gift – the opportunity to see the direct impact of their involvement in the lives of the community's youngest members.
