The scenic Bays Mountain Park in Kingsport, Tennessee, is set for an upgrade, thanks to a generous grant from state authorities. A check presentation ceremony held Tuesday at the park's Nature Center unveiled a $100,000 grant awarded by the Tennessee Department of Tourist Development. According to Kingsport's official announcement, these funds are earmarked for the construction of a new floating bridge on Lakeside Trail's western stretch, replacing the worn one.
"Today is an exciting day for Kingsport and we are thankful the state has invested in and continues to invest in Bays Mountain Park," Mayor Paul W. Montgomery expressed in a statement obtained by the City of Kingsport's news release. The current bridge, having endured over two decades of elemental challenges and the occasional fallen tree, is showing signs of significant wear and tear. The plan involves building a new bridge adjacent to the old one, which will be removed upon completion of the new construction.
The grant is part of a larger initiative by the Tennessee Department of Tourist Development, which in November dispersed more than $2 million to 30 communities across the state. The aim is to bolster local tourist attractions, augmenting Tennessee's reputation as a premium travel destination. Bays Mountain Park, known for its beautiful vistas and as a haven for hikers and nature enthusiasts, stands to benefit substantially from these improvements.
Brent Lambert, East Tennessee Division Manager for the Tennessee Department of Tourism, highlighted tourism's pivotal role in the state's economy during the ceremonial event. Generated taxes from the industry exceed $3.3 billion, "In Tennessee, more than $1,100 per household is being saved due to tourism," Lambert said, as noted by Kingsport's announcement. He added that Bays Mountain Park is often hailed by some as the premier park in Tennessee, an anchor for local tourism and a source of communal pride.
This financial injection not only signifies a commitment to preserving the park's natural beauty and accessibility but also an investment in the state's economic vitality through tourism. With these enhancements, Bays Mountain Park's allure is set to remain a steadfast draw for residents and visitors alike.
