The Kona Community Policing Section is partnering with Kona Costco, The Food Basket, and KAPA Radio personality Tommy Ching for the "Fill a Police Cruiser" food drive on Friday from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Kona Costco parking lot, inviting the public to donate nonperishable food items. A blue-and-white police cruiser will be parked at the front of the store for donations and photo opportunities with officers, according to the Hawaiʻi Police Department.
The initiative, first launched during the COVID-19 lockdown, has become an annual tradition to support kūpuna and families in need, collecting over 15,901 pounds of food and $27,924 in the past four years. Contributions from this year’s drive will be distributed by The Food Basket across Hawai‘i Island to assist local residents during the holiday season, as reported by the Hawaiʻi Police Department.
Officer Dwayne Sluss of the Kona Community Policing Section said, "Community generosity plays a vital role in supporting island residents during the holiday season," and encouraged public participation in the holiday drive. The drive supports residents with financial challenges and local food banks. For more information, Officer Sluss can be reached at (808) 326-4646, ext. 257, or [email protected], as stated by the Hawaiʻi Police Department.
