Residents in Northeast Ohio and Northwest Pennsylvania should prepare for a bout of challenging weather, as the National Weather Service in Cleveland has updated its forecasts, indicating persistent lake effect snow into Thursday. According to the NWS, areas such as Ashtabula, Lake, and Northern Erie (PA) Counties are under a Lake Effect Snow Warning, with expectations of significant snowfall. Winter Weather Advisories have been maintained for regions like Cuyahoga County, where more than six inches of snow may not accumulate. The advisory for Cuyahoga and Lake Effect Snow Warning for Ohio Counties is in effect until 7 AM Thursday, while the warning extends to 7 PM Thursday for Northwest Pennsylvania.

Beyond the immediate concerns of snow accumulation, the weather service has warned of blowing and drifting snow caused by northwesterly winds gusting up to 25-30 MPH, though winds are expected to diminish as they shift westerly throughout the day. A "very brief window" of respite is predicted for this evening before another round of impactful lake effect snow picks up again tonight, possibly accumulating an additional 3 to 6 inches along the lakeshore due to a clipper system sweeping across the region and, while a weak clipper system could push snowfall totals even higher along the lakeshore tonight where the initial lake effect band is expected to set up.

Aviation is also impacted by this deluge, with non-VFR conditions anticipated across the region due to persistent lake effect clouds and snow through Thursday, visibilities dropping to IFR, and potential for LIFR conditions during the heaviest bands of snow. This, according to the aviation forecast provided by the National Weather Service. Westerly winds are settling at 10-15 knots with gusts around 20 knots, though sites along Lake Erie may experience gusts upward of 30 knots through the late afternoon.

On Lake Erie, marine conditions are expected to see an improvement as Gale Warnings are set to expire and will be downgraded from west to east, the current warnings continue across the lake today but should be allowed to expire in the open waters and downgraded in the nearshore, as conditions may improve significantly, but into the weekend high pressure will lead to quieter marine conditions as reported in the marine forecast. However, even as Gale Warnings are set to lapse, the waters of Lake Erie will not completely calm until Friday when winds begin to weaken across the lake, persisting with elevated waves, especially in the central and eastern basins.
