A 20-year-old Lansing man has been formally charged in connection to the 2024 Memorial Day mass shooting in downtown Lansing that left multiple people wounded and one teenager dead. Damarion Joseph McCall is facing over a dozen felony charges, including open murder and six counts of assault with intent to murder, as reported by WILX. The charges come after an exhaustive investigation by Lansing police, following the incident which occurred near Rotary Park in the early hours of May 27, 2024.
During McCall's arraignment, the bond was set at $500,000 cash/surety. The suspect, facing a possible designation as a habitual third offender, has not yet posted the bond, as of the latest updates provided by the Lansing State Journal. In the violence that erupted amidst what police believe was a feud between two groups, investigators at the scene found 58 shell casings representing multiple calibers.
The Ingham County Prosecutor's Office commented on the extensive nature of the investigation leading to McCall's charges, stating, "Detectives conducted an extensive investigation that included numerous witness interviews, review of surveillance video, and analysis of forensic evidence." This was detailed in a news release cited by the Lansing State Journal. Additionally, seven individuals were discovered shot on the scene; Kylete Owens, a 17-year-old, was later pronounced dead due to a gunshot wound to the head.
Set to appear before 54-A District Court Judge Cynthia Ward for a probable cause conference on Jan. 9, McCall's preliminary exam is tentatively scheduled for Jan. 16, according to information stated by WLNS. With prosecutors indicating they do not expect anyone else to be charged in connection to the shooting, the focus remains on McCall's upcoming legal proceedings and the community's still-healing wounds following the tragic events of that Memorial Day.
