As winter tightens its grip on the Las Vegas valley, the Las Vegas Rescue Mission is stepping up its efforts to collect coats and blankets for the homeless community, amid a sharp decline in donations. Heather Engle, CEO of the mission, revealed an emergency drive held on Sunday to address this pressing need. "Blankets are the primary and most critical need, followed closely by warm coats for men, women, and children," Engle told News 3 Las Vegas.
In light of the upcoming cold, the nonprofit organization has witnessed an alarming rise in the number seeking help. Engle expressed concern over the potential shortage of warm layers to distribute to those in need. To facilitate the giving process, a drive-thru donation event allowed, for donors to provide items directly to staff from the convenience of their vehicles.
Heather Williams, Director of Development for the Las Vegas Rescue Mission, also noted the organization's unique challenge with the changing seasons. "It’s starting to get colder. Normally in Vegas, it hits us overnight," Williams told 8 News Now. The urgency is clear, as the Mission prepares for a winter that can be especially harsh for individuals without shelter.
Beyond seasonal attire, the Las Vegas Rescue Mission is in need of various other items to support personal well-being. They are seeking men's and women’s underwear, socks, and hygiene kits, which should include feminine hygiene products. "Everyone deserves that extra warmth," Williams said, emphasizing the year-round nature of their mission, as noted by 8 News Now. Donations can be made directly to the Las Vegas Rescue Mission at 480 West Bonanza Road.
