What Comes Next
The El Dorado County District Attorney’s Office operates an investigations bureau that often assists with officer-involved shootings and other major incidents, preparing evidence and supporting prosecutors. Public materials from the office describe how its investigators take part in the early stages of cases involving deputies and other law enforcement personnel.
If potential criminal charges are on the table, the district attorney’s office would review the findings from the sheriff’s investigation before deciding whether to file charges.
State Oversight and Local Context
California’s Department of Justice can also step in on certain officer-involved shootings. Under AB 1506, the department investigates incidents in which an unarmed civilian is killed and provides guidance for prosecutors and law enforcement, as outlined on the California DOJ website.
El Dorado County has seen high-profile critical incidents before. In 2023, for instance, a Placerville case that involved a fatal shooting during the service of a search warrant drew attention and a multi-agency review, as reported by CBS Sacramento.
Anyone with information or video related to Tuesday night’s shooting is asked to contact the El Dorado County Sheriff’s Office. The sheriff’s website lists the West Slope non-emergency dispatch line at (530) 621-6600 and provides an online crime-reporting form, accessible through El Dorado County. As always, in an emergency, call 911.
The El Dorado County Sheriff’s Office has not released additional identifying information about the woman who was shot as of Wednesday morning.
