A police officer with the Lewisville Police Department has resigned amid termination procedures following an arrest for sexual assault while off duty. Officer Zacur Vargas, a recent addition to the force and part of the Patrol Division, was arrested on December 12th by the Heath Department of Public Safety and subsequently charged with sexual assault of a child.
The incident involved a 16-year-old and occurred in Heath, Texas. Following the arrest, Vargas was booked into the Rockwall County Jail and later released on bond. The Lewisville Police Department's announcement indicated that their Internal Affairs Division found Vargas in violation of several policies, including noncompliance with the law, immoral conduct, and disregard of public trust.
Chief Brook Rollins highlighted the gravity of the behavior from one of his officers, stressing the significance of upholding public trust. "When a police officer violates the law, they violate the public trust, and that will not be tolerated in this department," Rollins said, per the Lewisville Police Department. "This incident does not reflect the values or actions of the men and women of this department who work every day to earn and uphold that trust. That is why we took immediate and decisive action."
Vargas, who had been employed since May, faced both criminal and internal investigations. Separate from the criminal case being handled by the Heath Department of Public Safety and Rockwall County authorities, the internal investigation by the Lewisville Police led to the swift initiation of his termination. Despite the serious nature of the charges, Vargas has opted to resign.
