Early morning occupants of a Koreatown apartment were abruptly awoken today to the presence of heavy smoke billowing from the second floor. According to a Los Angeles Fire Department alert, a fire ignited at approximately 4:28 AM at 255 S Catalina St., the source of which was determined to be a lithium-ion battery used for a bicycle. Firefighters, upon arrival, immediately switched to an offensive mode in an effort to combat the blaze.
Despite the aggressive nature of the fire, the LAFD successfully achieved a knockdown in 25 minutes, as reported in a subsequent alert. During the operation, a male patient found in the apartment above the fire unit is, as of now, being medically assessed, after firefighters bravely battled the flames. It was challenged by the construction's layout, and multiple prominently positioned units found themselves grappling with the spread of the smoke.
The coordinated efforts of 55 firefighters from the central bureau were instrumental in bringing the fire under control efficiently. Thankfully, no injuries have been reported among the fire department members who responded to the incident. As the LAFD concluded their rigorous efforts, the scene was secured, and further investigation into the fire's cause and impacts commenced.
Residents of the building, while shaken by the event, were relieved at the quick response of the emergency services. The fire, isolated to just a part of the building, spared most from the worst. Council District 10, within which the incident occurred, will be monitoring the aftermath closely as the community begins to recover from the disruption caused by the early dawn blaze, deeply affected by the events, and the male patient's condition remains a focus of attention among neighbors.
