Los Angeles residents, brace yourselves for the sunny and mostly clear week ahead. However, amidst the blue skies, a serious air quality issue lurks. According to the National Weather Service, today offers patchy fog in the morning, giving way to gradual clearing with highs around 71 degrees. The calm wind will shift to a west-southwest direction at about 5 mph. By nightfall, the sky will remain mostly clear, circling a low of 54 degrees.
Moving into the week, the forecast continues to delight with sunshine and clear evenings, as the highs oscillate in the mid-70s and nightly lows settle in the mid-50s. Please note, however, an "Air Quality Alert" has been issued by the South Coast Air Quality Management District (AQMD), mandating a ban on wood-burning across multiple counties within the South Coast Air Basin, which includes Los Angeles, parts of Orange, Riverside, and San Bernardino counties. Exception is made for homes above 3,000 feet in elevation, the Coachella Valley, or the High Desert.
The mandated ban, prohibits the burning of wood, pellets, and manufactured fire logs in any wood-burning device, both indoor and outdoor, is in effect until 11:59 PM Sunday. "Particles in smoke can get deep into the lungs and cause health problems," warns the advisory, emphasizing the necessity to reduce fine particle pollution levels, expected to be particularly high.
The health implications are serious: the South Coast AQMD advisory reveals such conditions can exacerbate asthma attacks, spike emergency room visits, and prompt hospital admissions. The AQMD urges residents to "check current and forecasted air quality levels" via their website or mobile app and recommends staying indoors with doors and windows shut, running air conditioners or air purifiers, and avoiding devices that draw in outside air like swamp coolers or whole-house fans, if alternative cooling options are available. Should Los Angeles locals seek respite from the indoor confines, the balmy and sunny daylight hours beckon, albeit with the prescribed caution to limit extended or intense activities under the clear, deceptive sky.
