A Christmas custody exchange in Upper Darby Township, Pennsylvania, ended in tragedy when a man allegedly shot the mother of his children before taking his own life. The incident occurred yesterday on the 200 block of Copley Road. A 34-year-old woman, whose identity has not been released, was fatally shot by a 45-year-old man in front of their three young children.
The woman had arrived to pick up two of her children from their father after a Christmas visit. An argument reportedly escalated, during which the father shot her while she was in the driver’s seat, then attempted to shoot himself. Authorities found the woman deceased in the vehicle and the father critically injured on a nearby sidewalk, according to PEOPLE. He was taken to a local hospital and could face charges if he survives.
Timothy M. Bernhardt, Superintendent of the Upper Darby Township Police, confirmed to PEOPLE that a custody order was in place at the time of the shooting. He explained that an argument occurred, during which the man fired two shots at the woman before exiting the vehicle and shooting himself once. Bernhardt added that the couple’s three children, aged one to six, are safe and have been reunited with family.
The children, who were in the backseat of the car during the incident, were unharmed but witnessed the event. Bernhardt told PEOPLE that the trauma from such an experience is lasting. NBC Philadelphia reported that the argument between the man and woman began inside the vehicle before the shooting took place.
Investigators are continuing to reconstruct the events leading up to the shooting. The primary focus remains on the welfare of the children and the investigation into the circumstances surrounding the incident during the holiday custody exchange. Authorities are also examining the broader context of the domestic dispute and its impact on those involved.
