The Maricopa County Department of Emergency Management has announced that a test of the Palo Verde Generating Station's emergency notification systems will take place on December 4. The tests, a part of federally mandated procedures, are designed to ensure the readiness of the station's alert mechanisms, should an actual emergency arise, as reported by the Arizona Emergency Information Network.
At 12:00 p.m. and 12:30 p.m., for about three minutes each time, sirens will sound within a ten-mile radius of the nuclear facility. Integrated into this public safety drill, an opt-in Wireless Emergency Alert will also be conducted at 12:15 p.m. Observations from personnel stationed within the area, tasked with verifying the siren's activation, will be reported back to the emergency management officials once the tests conclude, according to the Arizona Emergency Information Network announcement.
Compliance with Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) and the Federal Emergency Management Agency standards is the impetus behind these tests of the Alert and Notification System. The WEA system's flexibility allows for targeted notifications, though on December 4, only the inhabitants within the proximity of the siren's audibility who have elected to receive the alerts will be included in the WEA test. "This is a test of Maricopa County Wireless Emergency Alert system. No action is required," as stated by the Arizona Emergency Information Network.
In an actual emergency at Palo Verde, the sirens would act as a directive for residents to seek out information via their radios and televisions. Emergency agencies like the Maricopa County Department of Emergency Management, the Sheriff’s Office, or the Arizona Department of Public Safety will initiate the alert. An Emergency Alert System (EAS) message will then be broadcast providing vital instructions and information.
