Cobb Landmarks is rolling out a new venture for folks passionate about both food and heritage. The Southern Foodways Cookbook Club is a chance to dive into the past and taste it, too. Local history buffs and foodies will team up to explore Southern culinary traditions through a historical lens, starting this January and continuing through May.

According to a newsflash on Marietta's official website, this five-month program is all about connecting through cooking. Each first Saturday of the month, from 1:00 PM to 3:00 PM, members of the Club will meet at the William Root House to prep and taste dishes from the "Housekeeping in the Sunny South" cookbook, penned back in 1885. These sessions ar guided by Cobb Landmarks Food Historians Clarissa Lynch and Misha Harp, promise to dish out hearty helpings of history.

Each meeting highlights a different cultural theme. In February, discussions will focus on the influence of Black culture on Southern cuisine. March will examine the role of women in the South, followed in April by a look at how local crops have shaped traditional Southern diets, as per the city's announcement.

The program costs $200 per participant and includes a copy of the historic cookbook, valued at $30. Registration is currently open, with limited spots available. Interested participants can sign up online to join the Cookbook Club. The Cobb Landmarks & Historical Society, which organizes the program, aims to connect the community with its regional history. The group oversees historic sites such as the William Root House and promotes initiatives that highlight the area’s cultural heritage.
