The City of Maryland Heights Government is cautioning residents about an underhanded scam involving Bitcoin and cryptocurrency ATMs. The Maryland Heights Police Department (MHPD) has observed a rise in deceptive schemes designed to defraud citizens of their digital currency, according to a recent social media post.
As part of the alert, the MHPD has shared a series of tips for locals to recognize and avoid becoming victims of these cryptocurrency frauds. Among the advice offered, individuals are urged to be wary of unsolicited offers, protect their personal information, and verify the legitimacy of any transaction involving Bitcoin ATMs. In an effort to combat the trend, the MHPD is not only spreading awareness but also actively investigating reports of cryptocurrency-related scams.
The MHPD said scammers may demand payment in Bitcoin by promising high returns or issuing threats for immediate payment. Police advised residents to be cautious of unsolicited financial advice or investment offers.
City of Maryland Heights officials encouraged residents to learn how cryptocurrency works and recognize common scam indicators. The Maryland Heights Police Department said it is providing resources to raise awareness about cryptocurrency-related fraud and urged anyone who believes they have been targeted to report it to the department.
