On Maui, fireworks will be on sale for New Year’s Eve, but firecracker-style devices require a county permit, aerials are illegal, and violations can result in fines, criminal charges, and liability for property owners.
Permits, Prices And The New Year’s Countdown
A permit is required to buy firecrackers, costing $25 and covering up to 5,000 pieces for use during the county’s designated holiday period. According to Maui County MAPPS, New Year’s use is allowed from 9 p.m. on Dec. 31 to 1 a.m. on Jan. 1, and the Fire Prevention Bureau handles approvals and permit pickup. KITV has provided coverage explaining the process to residents.
Where To Buy And What You’re Allowed To Light
Consumer fireworks such as sparklers, snakes, and ground fountains under 12 feet do not require a permit but can only be used during the county’s designated time windows. Retailers typically begin sales after Christmas.
A limited number of firecracker permits are sold at specific stores and temporary tents around the islands. Because locations can change yearly, residents should check local notices before purchasing, according to Maui Now.
Aerial Fireworks Are Illegal And Come With Teeth
Aerial fireworks, including the mortar shells, cakes, and other devices that shoot high into the sky, are prohibited for private use and can carry criminal penalties. The Maui Police Department warns that importing, transferring, selling, or using aerial devices without a licensed display permit can result in misdemeanor or even felony charges.
Police also caution that property owners who allow illegal aerials to be launched from their land may face prosecution. County rules impose fines from several hundred dollars up to $2,000 for violations, according to Maui Police.
Public Shows And Safety Tips
Public fireworks displays are scheduled at select resorts offshore. Past shows have launched from a barge off the Grand Wailea and at Lantern Bay on Lānaʻi. Residents are encouraged to leave aerial fireworks to the professionals.
The department also recommends basic safety steps: keep young children away from fireworks, have a hose or bucket of water nearby, use a clear, flat area away from homes and structures, and never alter fireworks or remove their pyrotechnic contents, per Hawaii News Now.
State Crackdown And Holiday Enforcement
State leaders are increasing enforcement following deadly fireworks incidents on Oʻahu earlier this year. New measures give police more tools to target illegal explosives and raise fines for offenders. The governor signed enforcement packages that expand penalties and fund crackdowns, which could lead to stricter island-wide enforcement during major holidays, according to AP.
How To Apply And Who To Call
To get a firecracker permit, residents can use the county’s online MAPPS portal or pick up paperwork directly from the Fire Prevention Bureau. Questions can be directed to the bureau at (808) 876-4690.
For the latest information on vendor locations, sale dates and permit pickup points, the county directs the public to its permit page online at Maui County MAPPS.
