Mayor Michelle Wu has successfully negotiated a new four-year contract with Boston firefighters, aiming to improve both their compensation and operations within the department. According to a statement on the City of Boston's official website, the contract affects nearly 1,500 members of the Boston Fire Department, represented by Boston Firefighters IAFF Local 718.
"Our Boston firefighters and their families serve with dedication and sacrifice every hour of every day on behalf of the residents of Boston," Mayor Wu said, as reported by the city's official website. Under the agreement, firefighters will receive a 2.5% wage increase in the first year, followed by 2% increases in each subsequent year. These raises are intended to reflect the dedication of Boston’s firefighters as they continue their tireless work.
To enhance the longevity and recognition of firefighters' service, the new contract includes adjustments in base salaries at crucial service milestones, specifically at five, 10, 15, 20, and 25 years. "This contract not only strengthens the operational structure of the fire department, it also fairly compensates our firefighters who come to work every day and serve the residents of our city with professionalism and respect," Fire Commissioner Paul F. Burke, serving the residents of the city, said, as noted by the City of Boston's official website.
In a nod to modernizing the department, the contract incorporates the introduction of an electronic detail application designed to simplify the payment and filling process of details. Furthermore, retired Boston Fire members under 75 are now allowed to work paid details, which not only bolsters the number of available personnel but shows the city's investment in sending experienced hands back into the fire. Over the contract's duration, the paid detail rate is set to increase, further incentivizing retired firefighters to contribute their expertise.
The agreement, which spans from July 1, 2024, to June 30, 2028, also specifically addresses the needs of the Marine Unit by requiring specialized training for those serving in this area, ensuring that these specialized operatives are adequately prepared for the rigors that the watery realm demands. It has been reported that this is the 64th contract Mayor Wu has settled with unions representing city employees, marking a significant legacy of labor relations in her first term in office. After the membership of the Boston Firefighters IAFF Local 718 ratified the contract on December 22, 2025, the Boston City Council's approval is the next step and is expected to take place in the forthcoming new year.
