A McKinney mother is now facing the most serious charge in Texas after the death of her 3-year-old son, Dawson Zamora, who succumbed to severe brain injuries at a Dallas hospital. Prosecutors upgraded the case to capital murder after the boy died on Sunday, putting fresh focus on disturbing medical findings, text messages, and alleged cleanup efforts detailed by investigators.
Charges And Where The Child Died
McKinney police say 30-year-old Chelsea Berg was taken back into custody Monday on an upgraded charge of capital murder, according to FOX 4 News. Records and reporting show Dawson died Sunday, Dec. 7, at Medical City Dallas, and Berg's boyfriend, 30-year-old Christopher Alexander, remains jailed on earlier charges of injury to a child and tampering with evidence, as reported by CBS Texas. Prosecutors have indicated that a longer arrest affidavit outlining investigators' findings will be released publicly.
Hospital Staff Flagged Injuries
Police first responded on Oct. 14 after Alexander brought an unresponsive Dawson to Medical City McKinney. Hospital staff reported severe brain trauma, bleeding and bruises in various stages of healing, findings that investigators said did not line up with a simple fall, according to The Dallas Morning News. Those medical red flags triggered an immediate criminal inquiry and led to the couple's initial arrests in October. Investigators say they collected physical evidence at the home that is expected to figure into the prosecution's case.
Text Messages And Affidavits
Court affidavits describe a series of text messages in which Berg allegedly warned Alexander that Dawson was being hurt, writing, "You bruise him, hurt him, and cause damage every single time you are alone with him," according to reporting by FOX 4 News. Investigators also allege Alexander tried to clean up a scene, noting water on floors, a bloody towel and blood found in a washing machine, details that the arrest paperwork reportedly lays out. Prosecutors say those alleged steps, combined with the pattern of injuries, form a key part of the evidence they plan to present.
Legal Exposure
Capital murder is the highest-level charge in Texas and, upon conviction, can result in the death penalty or life in prison without parole, depending on whether prosecutors seek execution under state law. The Texas Code of Criminal Procedure spells out how sentencing in capital trials is handled and what punishments are available to juries and judges, per Texas law.
Family Reaction
Dawson's father, Dahrian Zamora, wrote on social media that his son "held on to spend one last birthday with me," and later vowed he would "not rest until justice is served," according to coverage by The Dallas Express. Neighbors and online supporters have posted condolences and launched fundraising efforts as the family and investigators await the public release of the full arrest affidavit.
Where The Case Stands
As of Tuesday, both Berg and Alexander were listed in the Collin County jail. Berg had previously been released on bond after an initial injury-to-a-child charge but was re-arrested following Dawson's death, The Dallas Morning News reports. Berg's attorney told the outlet that a judge briefly modified her bail conditions so she could see Dawson as his condition worsened and that she was allowed to say goodbye before he died. Prosecutors say more details will be made public when the arrest affidavit is filed and that the Collin County criminal process will determine what comes next.
