The Memphis Grizzlies’ recent momentum has stalled with center Zach Edey sidelined at least four weeks due to a stress reaction in his left ankle. Edey, who had offseason surgery on the same ankle, will be re-evaluated after the four-week period. Since debuting on Nov. 15, he has averaged 13.6 points and 11.1 rebounds, contributing to the Grizzlies’ improved defense despite their 11–13 record.

Edey’s agent, Mark Bartelstein, told The Commercial Appeal that the move is part of a plan to protect Edey’s long-term health and that his prognosis remains excellent. The injury pauses the Grizzlies’ recent surge, during which their defense climbed into the top 10 and has allowed the fewest points in the NBA over the past five games.

Despite the timing, Edey’s agent told Sports Illustrated that sidelining him is a precaution recommended by the team and medical staff to protect his long-term health.

With Edey sidelined, the Grizzlies are expected to rely more on Jock Landale and Jaren Jackson Jr. at center. Brandon Clarke, out after right-knee surgery, is projected to return in 2–5 weeks. The team is also awaiting the return of Ja Morant, who could be back soon and help offset Edey’s absence.

The Grizzlies will now have to navigate the next stretch without Edey, starting with a home matchup against the Utah Jazz on Dec. 12. The game will offer an early look at how the team adjusts in his absence.
