Memphis-Shelby County Schools have inaugurated a Real Time Safety Center, a pioneering facility aimed to enhance the security of students and staff on campus, at the repurposed site of the former Alton Elementary School. "Student safety is not an option, but it is essential," interim Superintendent Dr. Roderick Richmond conveyed at the ribbon-cutting event held on Thursday morning, emphasizing the critical nature of the feeling of security in the educational setting, as reported by Action News 5.
The center, described as "state of the art" by MSCS’s interim chief of Safety and Security Carolyn Jackson, operates nonstop, its staffed by a dedicated team tasked with surveilling the myriad of cameras installed across district campuses, as per details obtained by The Commercial Appeal. Housed within this South Memphis building, the facility not only functions as an oversight hub but also includes a simulation room designed to provide officers with vital emergency situation training, a strategic step taken by MSCS in its commitment to prevention and rapid response during incidents.
In alignment with the district's initiative, over $17 million was allocated for security enhancements back in 2023, with Action News 5 reporting that updates at over half of MSCS schools have been completed, the heart of this investment being the Real Time Safety Center, which aims to drastically reduce officer response times and increase the accuracy of crucial decisions made during emergencies.
