The Mentor-on-the-Lake Police Department issued a scam alert on social media, warning residents about a purported non-profit organization soliciting donations under false pretenses. The department shared the alert through a Facebook post, informing the public of an entity that, while appearing legitimate on paper, is not associated with any recognized law enforcement agency in the country.
The dubious organization can only be reached via email and directs all prospective donors to send contributions to a P.O. Box located in Texas. Additionally, the given address for this organization is based in Indianapolis, a detail that has raised several red flags. In light of these concerns, the Mentor-on-the-Lake Police Department urges individuals to exercise caution. "If you receive mail, an email, or a phone call from someone asking for donations and you are unsure of its legitimacy, please reach out to the Mentor-on-the-Lake P.D. at (440) 257-7234 or your local police department before sending any money," the police department stated in their online alert.
Scams of this nature frequently attempt to capitalize on the goodwill of individuals toward law enforcement and charitable causes. They often create a semblance of authenticity to swindle unsuspecting donors. The Mentor-on-the-Lake Police Department's initiative serves as a cornerstone, reminding citizens to maintain a healthy skepticism and to verify the legitimacy of any organization before parting with their hard-earned money.
