Michigan Attorney General Dana Nessel is leading a holiday consumer protection campaign to shield shoppers from scams, with five alerts covering payment app deceptions, manipulative online retailers, and the longstanding ‘grandparents scam.’ Her campaign uses holiday-themed messaging to remind Michiganders to stay vigilant and protect their personal information and finances, according to the Department of Attorney General.
In emphasizing safe holiday shopping, Nessel advises verifying sellers, restricting transfers, and confirming urgent requests before acting. She stated, “Scammers look to take advantage of shoppers during the holidays. By slowing down, verifying sellers, and only shopping with trusted companies, Michiganders can better protect themselves and their wallets this holiday season,” as reported by the Department of Attorney General.
The Department of Attorney General is warning consumers about Facebook Marketplace risks, advising public meetups, avoiding early payments, and using reputable retailers with clear return policies. The department has launched a social media account, Michigan Consumer Protection (@MIConsumerWatch), to share scam alerts, advice, and updates. The holiday campaign will be featured there, with major scams posted weekly on Mondays and daily updates on MI Consumer Alerts accounts.
