With the holiday season underway, Michigan Attorney General Dana Nessel is issuing a series of consumer alerts aimed at helping residents guard against scams and protect their personal information. Her office announced that the week-long awareness campaign will highlight common fraud schemes and deceptive practices that often increase during the festive period.
The campaign, featuring themes from popular holiday movies, focuses on several key issues: phishing scams, the importance of Michigan’s Scanner Law, the perpetuation of puppy scams, the use of artificial intelligence by fraudsters, and the need for monitoring credit card transactions. "During the holiday season, it’s more important than ever to stay informed about how scammers attempt to steal your hard-earned money," Nessel stated in the Michigan Department of Attorney General. "By staying one step ahead, you can better protect yourself and focus on what truly matters: sharing the joy and spirit of the holidays with loved ones."
As part of these efforts, Attorney General Nessel launched a new consumer protection social media account, Michigan Consumer Protection (@MIConsumerWatch), which aims to be a trusted source for scam alerts and consumer protection tips. This account, disseminating valuable resources and updates from the Department of Attorney General, can be found on platforms such as Facebook, Instagram, X, and LinkedIn. It's a digital move to give residents a tool to stay abreast of the latest threats to their financial safety.
Detailed information on the specific scams of the week will be available through press releases issued each Monday by the Department of Attorney General, while daily updates on prevention tactics against such deceptions are to be shared on MI Consumer Alerts social media accounts. It is an ongoing effort to create informed citizens who can recognize and report suspicious activities before they result in financial loss or stolen identities.
