Minneapolis residents have a new place to hang their hats and their hopes for community revitalization. According to an announcement by the Minneapolis Park and Recreation Board (MPRB), a new park along the Midtown Greenway will be christened "Parque Monarca." The naming decision follows a comprehensive public engagement process, adding the final touches to a long-term transformation of a site that once housed towering grain elevators.

The park, located at 2828 11th Ave S, is part of the Midtown Phillips neighborhood's greenspace portfolio. It sits along the Midtown Greenway Regional Trail, a key corridor for cyclists and pedestrians. In its statement, MPRB noted that the site’s former name, the “Cepro Site,” was merely a placeholder — a nod to its industrial past before Hennepin County transferred the land to the park board in 2019, clearing the way for its current park status.

Since 2011, the park has seen various improvements aimed at fostering a sense of community and environmental stewardship, including the 2022 addition of a community garden. These efforts culminated in the MPRB's two public hearings on May 22, 2024, and October 9, 2025, which confirmed the community's desire for the new name. The resolution to adopt "Parque Monarca" (Resolution 2025-264) was approved on December 10, as reported by the MPRB.

Adjustments to acknowledge the park's new identity are already underway. The MPRB's website and registration software have been updated to reflect the change from "Cepro Site" to "Parque Monarca," ensuring residents and visitors receive consistent information as they plan their outings and activities. Installation of new signage is scheduled for the upcoming spring.
